In class on Thursday we discussed ideas of Barthes's "Gap" and the concept of making assumptions and developing ideas from signs that don't directly reveal a message but remain effective because of what they imply. Is not the most erotic portion of the body where the garment gapes? What I found most interesting was that people literally fall into this "gap" subconsciously making inferences based on knowledge obtained from experience with society's signs and not necessarily from signs themselves. Messages displayed without actually displaying them. I believe that it is the mastering of this idea that allows for change in society. Because boundaries are clearly set in society, it is only when one steps outside these boundaries while also remaining in them that new ideas can emerge.
