When discussing globalization of languages in Dr. Cummigs lecture last class, it left me wondering why Americans are depicted in such a demeaning way in other countries? After studying abroad last fall semester in Italy, it was clear to me that Europeans see Americans in a very particular way. That is as, chauvinistic, rude, sex crazed individuals. Although this may seem a bit harsh, when analyzing the way we are portrayed in even our own media, it became clear why many would think this. With shows today such as “Jersey Shore” and “Real World,” we can see how many foreigners could believe these qualities for all Americans. In each of these “reality” TV shows, both men and women act extremely loud and obnoxious. It is also apparent that each cast member is only concerned about getting drunk and getting laid. When we think of the word “reality,” we associate it with its definition, “the state of things as they actually exist, rather than as they may appear or may be thought to be.” However, media has taken this word and spun it into a completely different meaning. When we watch Reality television we are expected to believe that what we are watching is the truth and in fact reality. Instead we end up watching lifestyles that are far from the truth. Not only are the ways these people live their life unrealistic, they are often scripted as well. Many times producers will stock the bars with endless amounts of alcohol in order to loosen people up and make better television. This results in more inappropriate behavior and decisions cast members wouldn’t necessarily make when sober. It is no wonder why other countries portray us in such a terrible way. If the media doesn’t start representing our youth in a more serious manner, it may become impossible for anyone to take us seriously.
