The Emergent Rules by Charles Jencks examined eleven of the most significant canons in art and architecture. The architects the most commonly aimed canon to achieve is urbane urbanism. To achieve this in a design one must focus on having the "proper balance between essential elements instead of one set of dualities" (285). Some of the dualities that have to be balanced are working to living and public to private.

Like urbane urbanism in architecture, there are many areas in life that need a 'proper balance' in order to achieve a goal. The career of a woman sports journalists is difficult because there is a double bind on them. Their challenge is having to balance masculine to feminine, attractive to passable, and knowledgeable to know it all. This is hard for a woman broadcaster/journalist because they can not be successful in the sports world without the balance of these dualities.
